Saturn has 7 major moons and more than 70 known moonlets. For the amateur astronomer, detecting and identifying these major moons is a challenge that requires both observational skill and excellent telescope handling skills. It is good to remind the student that we are trying to detect small targets from almost 1.5 billion kilometers away; every Saturnian moon will appear as a mere point of light, no shape or color can be detected in amateur equipment from Earth.

In this episode of 'How Do You KNOW?', Dr. Barth will share techniques and a chart that he developed for determining the positions of the moons of Saturn so that you too can capture and identify the moons of Saturn.

The activities and materials provided free for the How Do You Know? program are based upon Dr. Barth’s award-winning book: Astronomy For Educators. This book is used as a resource in more than 5,700 schools across the United States and in more than 50 countries world wide. The book is published as an Open Educational Resource Text by the University of Arkansas Library Press.
