ED APO FCD1 Series

Apochromatic (ED APO) lenses are designed to bring all the colors into focus in the same plane where as Achromatic lenses are corrected to bring two wavelengths into focus in the same plane.

FCD-1 is manufactured by Hoya in Japan. This glass is used in the FCD-1 ED Essential and Carbon Fiber Series Apochromatic high-performance refractors.

Chromatic aberration is the phenomenon of different colors focusing at different distances from a lens. Telescope objective lenses for wide-band digital imaging in astronomy must have apochromatic correction, as the optical sensitivity of typical CCD imaging arrays can extend from the ultraviolet through the visible spectrum and into the near infrared wavelength range. Apochromatic designs require optical glasses with special dispersive properties to achieve three color crossings. Explore Scientific achieves this using costly ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) glass.

Essential Series ED APO Triplets with HOYA FCD1 Glass

The Explore Scientific Essential Series ED APO triplet refractors use HOYA FCD1 extra-low dispersion glass, manufactured in Japan, in an air-spaced triplet design that brings all colors of light into sharp focus. Apochromatic optics minimize chromatic aberration, the purple fringing seen around bright objects in achromatic refractors, delivering crisp, high-contrast images with natural color.

Essential Series refractors, including the popular ED80, ED102 and ED127, are versatile telescopes for both visual observing and astrophotography. Their compact size and fast cool-down make them ideal for grab-and-go observing, travel and star parties, while their flat, color-corrected fields make them excellent imaging telescopes when paired with a field flattener or focal reducer. Multi-coated optics and quality focusers support precise focusing for planetary and deep-sky work.

Many observers choose an Essential Series ED APO as their primary telescope because it offers premium apochromatic performance at an accessible price. Mounted on an iEXOS-100 tracker or PMC-Eight GoTo mount, it becomes a complete astrophotography system; on a Twilight alt-az mount it becomes a superb visual telescope. Whether you are imaging nebulae or enjoying sharp views of the Moon and planets, the Essential Series delivers outstanding value.
