Telescope Mount Counterweights
Counterweights balance the weight of your telescope, camera and accessories on an equatorial mount. Proper balance is essential for smooth, accurate tracking and helps reduce strain on the mount's motors and gears, which improves pointing accuracy and extends the life of your equipment.
This collection includes supplemental counterweights for Explore Scientific iEXOS-100, EXOS and EXOS-2 mounts, as well as genuine Losmandy counterweights and counterweight sets for truss-tube Dobsonians. Adding a counterweight is often necessary when you upgrade to a heavier telescope or add cameras, guide scopes, dew heaters and other accessories for astrophotography.
To balance an equatorial mount, loosen the right ascension clutch and slide the counterweights until the telescope stays level without drifting, then repeat for the declination axis. For astrophotography, many imagers prefer a slight east-heavy imbalance to keep gears engaged. With the correct counterweights, your mount will track more smoothly and deliver sharper images and steadier views.
