Why does my ASCOM Client Program (i.e. Cartes du Ciel) show a "64-bit connection" Error when starting?

(40)[C][C3][C3a]

Some 64-bit ASCOM client applications may show an error message when trying to connect to the 32-bit version of the PMC-Eight ASCOM driver; Cartes du Ciel is an example of this  This message comes up because the previous versions of the PMC-Eight ASCOM driver is compiled as a 32-bit driver to maintain compatibility with older versions of ASCOM client programs.

We offer an updated version of the PMC-Eight ASCOM driver (ver. 1.14 2018-01-07 ANY CPU) that will work with both 32-bit and 64-bit ASCOM Clients. You can download it here:

There is also a workaround that works with any ASCOM client and also allows you to connect multiple programs to the PMC-Eight, and there is a workaround specific to those clients that offer 32-bit versions. Your first choice is to use the ASCOM Standard Platform POTH Scope-Dome Hub local server program to connect to the PMC-Eight and then connect all your ASCOM client programs (32 and 64-bit) to the POTH.

Alternatively, you can see if your ASCOM client program comes in a 32-bit version. You can download a 32-bit version of Cartes du Ciel which is compatible with the PMC-Eight driver.  When using multiple ASCOM Client Programs with the PMC-Eight control system, we recommend that you use the POTH Scope-Dome Hub local server program to connect to the PMC-Eight system.
