Explore Scientific SMART MICROSCOPE SLIDE: Honey Bee Wing

 

Comb-like teeth (called hamuli) hold together the two wings of a honey bee on each side of its body. Hamuli allow the wings to act as one winged surface to give the bee lift in flight.

Under the microscope it appears that the bee's wings are rigid, and this perception kept us from understanding how they fly because a bee's wings are small for the size of their body. But it was learned by capturing a flying bee using slow motion video to slow down the twisting, rotating wings that this motion creates very strong lift, allowing the honey bee to fly.
